The first time I tried Creme de la Mer was at a department store counter in December. My skin felt like it had been wrapped in a warm towel. Then I saw the price on the jar and put it right back.
After a lot of label reading, I found something useful. The closest la mer dupes share the same base ingredients, and the best one is Nivea Creme in the blue tin. It uses mineral oil, microcrystalline wax, glycerin and lanolin alcohol, which are some of the main ingredients in La Mer’s base too.
No dupe copies La Mer’s fermented sea kelp. But a lot of what you feel on your skin comes from the base, and that part is easy to find for less.
I’ve used all seven of these creams through at least one cold season. Below is what is really in La Mer, how I picked each dupe, and which one fits your skin. If you want more swaps like this, my drugstore skincare dupes post covers serums and cleansers too.
What is the best La Mer dupe?
Nivea Creme is the best La Mer dupe for most people. It shares mineral oil, microcrystalline wax, glycerin and lanolin alcohol with La Mer’s base, so it feels thick and cushy in the same way. It skips the fermented sea kelp, but it seals in moisture just as well.
If you have sensitive skin or want anti-aging extras, there are better picks below. But if you just want that rich, wrapped feeling, start with the tin.
What is actually in La Mer?
The first ingredient on the Creme de la Mer label is a sea kelp extract. The brand ferments it with vitamins and minerals for weeks and calls the result Miracle Broth. That is the part you are paying for, and nobody else makes it.
After the kelp, the list reads a lot like a classic cold cream. Mineral oil, petrolatum, glycerin, microcrystalline wax and lanolin alcohol all show up near the top. These are occlusives and humectants, which means they pull water into skin and then hold it there.
Petrolatum is one of the strongest moisture sealers there is. Studies on skin barrier repair show it can cut water loss from the skin by up to 99%. So the heavy, comforting feel of La Mer is mostly coming from a very old and very cheap ingredient.
The jar also has fragrance. If your skin gets red or itchy from scented creams, that is worth knowing before you spend that much.
How I picked these la mer dupes
I looked for three things. First, a base that overlaps with La Mer: mineral oil, petrolatum, waxes, lanolin or rich plant butters. Second, the same thick, sink-in-slowly texture. Third, a cream that still felt good on my face eight hours later, not just right after I put it on.
I tested each one at night through a dry winter, mostly on my cheeks and around my nose where I flake first. I also tried each one under makeup once. A few were too heavy for that, and I say so below.
I did not count any cream with a long list of drying alcohols near the top. Those can feel nice going on and leave you tighter by morning.
Which La Mer dupe is right for your skin type?
Very dry skin: Nivea Creme or Weleda Skin Food. Both are thick, sealing creams, and both work well as the last step at night. Pair either one with my face oils for winter if you still feel tight.
Sensitive or eczema-prone skin: First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream. It is fragrance free and has colloidal oatmeal, which the FDA lists as a skin protectant. My fragrance free moisturizers for sensitive skin post has more options.
Mature skin: Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream. It adds niacinamide and peptides, which La Mer’s classic cream does not lean on. It also feels lighter than the jar suggests.
Combination skin: belif Moisturizing Bomb or Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream. They give you a softer version of the rich feel without sitting on your T-zone all day.
How to use a rich cream so it feels luxe
A lot of the La Mer ritual is how you put it on. The brand tells you to warm the cream between your fingertips until it turns a little clear, then press it into your skin. That works for every cream on this list.
Apply it to damp skin, not dry. A humectant like glycerin needs water nearby to pull from. Then let the occlusives seal that water in. On really dry nights, I add a thin layer of petrolatum on top, which is basically slugging.
Use less than you think. A pea size covers my whole face for the thick creams. If your skin is still flaking after a week, my guide to fixing flaky skin walks through what else to change, and a humidifier for your skin helps a lot in a heated bedroom.
The 7 la mer dupes I keep on my shelf
evrygal recommends Nivea Creme as the first one to try, because it is the closest match and the easiest to find. The rest are here for specific skin needs.
Best Overall Dupe
NIVEA
Creme Face, Body and Hand Moisturizing Cream
This is the one people mean when they say La Mer dupe, and it earns it. The base is mineral oil, microcrystalline wax, glycerin and lanolin alcohol, so it feels thick and cushiony the same way. I use it on my face at night and on my hands all day. It does have a light classic scent, so skip it if fragrance bothers you.
Best for Very Dry Patches
Weleda
Skin Food Original Ultra-Rich Cream
Skin Food has been around since 1926, and makeup artists still keep a tube in their kit. It is made with sunflower oil, lanolin, beeswax and calming plant extracts like chamomile and calendula. It is thick, so I use it on dry patches, elbows and my cheeks when the wind is bad. The herbal smell is strong, which you will either love or not.
Best for Mature Skin
Olay
Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream, Fragrance-Free
If you want more than moisture, this is the jar. It has niacinamide, a peptide and hyaluronic acid, so it works on fine lines and dullness too. The texture is rich but it sinks in faster than you expect, and it sits well under makeup. This fragrance free version is the one I buy.

Best Under Makeup
Embryolisse
Lait-Creme Concentre
This French pharmacy cream is a backstage favorite for a reason. It has shea butter, beeswax and aloe, and it feels milky and soft rather than greasy. Foundation glides over it like a primer. It is not quite as heavy as La Mer, so very dry skin may want something richer at night.
Best for Combination Skin
belif
Moisturizing Bomb Ceramide Moisturizer
This one gives me the plush La Mer feel on my cheeks without making my forehead shiny by noon. Ceramides help fill in a dry barrier, and the cream has a thick, whipped texture. I like it as a day cream in winter. If you’re oily, the lighter belif Aqua Bomb is the safer pick.
Best for Sensitive Skin
First Aid Beauty
Ultra Repair Cream
Not the most exciting pick, but trust me on this one if your skin reacts to everything. It is fragrance free and uses colloidal oatmeal, shea butter and ceramides to calm red, tight skin. It works on face and body, and I keep it by the bed for eczema flares. The texture is thick but whips out thin.

Best Everyday Luxe Feel
Kiehl’s
Ultra Facial Cream with 4.5% Squalane
This is the splurge on the list, but it is still a small slice of La Mer’s price. It has 4.5% squalane, which feels silky and helps skin hold onto moisture all day. It is lighter than the others, so it works for normal and combo skin in every season. I reach for it on mornings when I want rich but not heavy.

If you liked this, my ceramide moisturizers roundup has more barrier creams, and my winter skincare routine for sensitive skin shows where a rich cream fits in a full routine.
Shopping for someone else? A few of these tuck nicely into my skincare gift sets picks. And if dupes are your thing, the sol de janeiro dupes post is a fun one.
evrygal recommends: NIVEA Creme Face, Body and Hand Moisturizing Cream for la mer dupes, based on our hands-on testing.
La Mer feels special, but most of that feeling comes from a rich, sealing base you can find for much less.
Start with the Nivea tin. If your skin is sensitive, go straight to First Aid Beauty instead.

FAQ
Is Nivea Creme really the same as La Mer?
No, it is not the same. They share several base ingredients, like mineral oil, microcrystalline wax, glycerin and lanolin alcohol, which is why they feel alike. La Mer adds its fermented sea kelp blend, and Nivea does not have that. For moisture alone, most people will not notice a big difference.
Is La Mer worth the money?
It is a lovely cream, and some people truly love it. But most of what you feel comes from a base you can get in much cheaper creams. If you want to try it, buy a small size or a sample first and compare it to Nivea side by side.
Can I use these la mer dupes on oily or acne-prone skin?
Most of them are too heavy for oily skin, especially Nivea and Weleda. Try Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream or belif Moisturizing Bomb, and only at night at first. If you break out easily, patch test on your jawline for a few days before using it on your whole face.
Are la mer dupes safe for sensitive skin?
Some are and some are not. Nivea, Weleda and Embryolisse all have some scent, which can bother reactive skin. First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream and the fragrance free Olay are the gentlest picks here.
Should I use these creams morning or night?
The thickest ones, Nivea and Weleda, work best at night as your last step. Olay, Embryolisse, belif and Kiehl’s are light enough for daytime under sunscreen. In the morning, always finish with SPF, since none of these creams have sun protection.
