For years, my Sundays had a weird shape. Fine until about 3pm, then a slow knot in my stomach as Monday got closer. By 9pm I was on the couch, scrolling, dreading my inbox.
A Sunday self care routine fixed most of that. The short version: sleep in a little, get outside, reset one small space, take a long bath, do a face mask, and write a light plan for Monday. Then keep the evening dim and early.
I’ve done some version of this most Sundays for the past year. Below are my 7 steps, a 1-hour version for packed weekends, free ideas, and the 6 things I keep stocked for it.
What Is a Sunday Self Care Routine?
A Sunday self care routine is a set of slow, restful steps that help you recharge before the week starts. Most include rest, time outside, a bath or skincare, and a light plan for Monday. It should leave you calmer, not busier.
It’s different from a Sunday reset. A reset is about chores, like laundry, groceries, and a clean kitchen. Self care is about you. I do both, but if I only have time for one, I pick this.
Why Sundays Need Their Own Self Care Routine
The Sunday scaries are real, and they’re common. A LinkedIn survey found that about 80% of US professionals said they get anxious on Sunday nights before the work week.
Part of it is the shift. You go from no schedule to a full one overnight. Your brain starts rehearsing Monday’s meetings while you’re still in your weekend clothes.
A routine gives that worry somewhere to go. When I have a plan for Sunday, I stop drifting between the couch and my phone. The day feels like mine again, and Monday feels smaller.
My 7-Step Sunday Self Care Routine
Here’s what a normal Sunday looks like for me. Swap the order around to fit your plans, and skip anything that feels like a chore.
Step 1: Sleep In, But Only a Little
I let myself sleep in on Sundays, just not too much. I wake up within about an hour of my weekday alarm.
Sleeping until noon feels great at the time. But sleep experts call the result social jet lag, and it’s part of why Monday mornings feel so rough. A small lie-in gives you rest without throwing off your body clock.
Step 2: Get Outside for an Hour
After coffee, I go outside. A long walk, a farmers market, a coffee on a park bench. Anything that gets me out of my apartment and into daylight.
A 2019 study in Scientific Reports found that people who spent at least 120 minutes a week in nature reported better health and wellbeing. A Sunday walk gets you about halfway there. My mindful walking routine makes it feel even calmer.
Step 3: Reset One Small Space
I don’t clean the whole house on self care Sunday. I pick one spot, usually my nightstand or my bathroom counter, and make it nice.
Clearing one surface takes 15 minutes and makes the rest of the day feel lighter. If you want the full chores version, my Sunday reset routine walks through everything.
Step 4: Take a Long, Warm Bath
This is the center of my Sunday. I run a hot bath with Epsom salt, light a candle, and set my book and tea on a bath tray. Phone stays in the other room.
The timing helps too. A 2019 review from researchers at the University of Texas at Austin found that a warm bath or shower 1 to 2 hours before bed helped people fall asleep faster. So I aim for a 7pm bath on Sunday nights.
Quick honesty note on Epsom salt. There isn’t strong proof that your skin absorbs much magnesium from a bath. I still use it because the warm soak feels great on sore legs and the scent makes it feel special.
Step 5: Do a Face Mask and a Little Pampering
While I’m still warm from the bath, I put on a sheet mask and cooling under-eye patches. Then I lie on my bed for 15 minutes and do nothing at all.
Your skin is soft from the steam, so masks feel extra nice right after. I wrote a full guide to the best face masks for glowing skin if you want something beyond a sheet mask. I usually finish with my lip mask routine before bed.
Step 6: Write a Brain Dump and a Light Plan
Around 8pm, I sit down with a notebook for 10 minutes. First I write everything that’s bugging me. Then I list the three things that actually matter for Monday.
This one has research behind it. A 2018 Baylor University study found that people who wrote a to-do list for the next day before bed fell asleep faster than people who didn’t. Writing it down tells your brain it can stop holding onto it. My free daily planner template works well for this.
Step 7: Keep the Evening Dim and Early
Sunday night is not the night for a three-episode binge. I dim the lights, put on something cozy, and read in bed.
I try to be asleep 30 minutes earlier than usual. It’s my small gift to Monday morning me. My wind down routine has the full step-by-step for this part.
My 1-Hour Sunday Self Care Routine
Some weekends are packed. Birthday dinners, travel, family stuff. On those Sundays I squeeze the routine into one hour before bed.
- A 20-minute warm bath with Epsom salt and a candle
- A 15-minute sheet mask while lying down
- A 10-minute brain dump and Monday list
- 15 minutes of reading in bed with the lights low
That’s enough to take the edge off the Sunday scaries. It also means the habit survives busy weeks, which is how it becomes a real routine.
Free Sunday Self Care Ideas
You don’t need to buy anything to do this well. Some of my favorite Sunday self care ideas cost nothing.
- Call a friend while you walk
- Cook one slow, cozy meal from scratch
- Do a 20-minute stretch on your bedroom floor
- Take a nap with no alarm guilt
- Delete five apps you don’t use
- Make a playlist for Monday morning
- Paint your nails and let them actually dry

Sunday Self Care Mistakes I Stopped Making
Turning self care into a to-do list. If your Sunday has 14 steps and a schedule, it’s just another workday. Pick three or four steps and let the rest go.
Checking work email to get ahead. I used to peek on Sunday night and then lie awake thinking about it. Now work apps stay closed until Monday.
Scrolling instead of resting. Two hours on my phone never once left me feeling rested. I swap it for a book, a bath, or a walk.
Staying up late to stretch the weekend. I get why you do it. But it makes Monday harder, which makes next Sunday feel worse.
The 6 Things I Use for My Sunday Self Care Routine
None of these are required. They just make the bath and pamper steps feel special, and evrygal recommends starting with the Epsom salt soak if you only pick one.
Best Overall
Dr Teal’s
Epsom Salt Soak with Eucalyptus and Spearmint
If you only buy one thing from this list, make it this. The eucalyptus scent fills the whole bathroom and makes an ordinary bath feel like a spa night. The bag lasts me about a month of Sundays.
Best Bath Upgrade
Royal Craft Wood
Foldable Bathtub Tray Caddy
This is what turned my bath into a whole event. It holds a book, a mug of tea, and a candle across the tub. It also stops me from bringing my phone in, since my hands are already busy.
Best Sheet Mask
GLAM UP
Korean Facial Sheet Mask 12 Pack
Twelve masks means twelve Sundays, and you get a mix of formulas in the pack. They’re soaked in serum and stay put while you lie down. My skin looks plumper the next morning, which helps on a Monday.

Best for Puffy Eyes
Grace and Stella
Under Eye Masks
I keep these in the fridge so they’re cool when I put them on. They take the puff out after a salty Saturday dinner. They’re also cute enough that the whole thing feels like a treat.
Best for Lounging
PAVILIA
Plush Fleece Robe
Getting out of a hot bath into a cold room is the worst. This robe is thick, soft, and warm right away. I wear it for the face mask step and the brain dump, and sometimes all evening.
Best for Mood
MULCHUM
Lavender Scented Candle
Lighting this is my signal that Sunday self care has started. The lavender is soft, not soapy, and it fills a small room fast. It’s the step I’d keep even on a busy weekend.

FAQ
What should a Sunday self care routine include?
Rest, time outside, something for your body like a bath or face mask, and a light plan for Monday. You don’t need all of it every week. Three or four steps you enjoy is plenty.
How do I stop the Sunday scaries?
Give your Sunday evening a calm plan so your mind has less room to spiral. Write a short to-do list for Monday so your brain can let go of it. Then skip work email and get to bed a little early.
What is the difference between a Sunday reset and Sunday self care?
A Sunday reset is about chores, like laundry, groceries and cleaning. Sunday self care is about resting and recharging you. Lots of people do the reset in the morning and the self care in the evening.
How long should a Sunday self care routine take?
As long as you have. My full version fills most of the afternoon and evening. On busy weekends, I do a 1-hour version with a bath, a face mask and a quick plan.
What are some free Sunday self care ideas?
Take a long walk, call a friend, cook a slow meal, stretch on your floor, or nap without an alarm. Making a Monday playlist or deleting apps you don’t use also helps. None of these cost a thing.
